Abstract - optional Our aim, in producing this guide, is to provide a detailed view of the world of market research IT software. It brings together 120 software applications created specifically for MR, giving detailed comparisons of what the software can do and comparative prices. There are extensive listings of almost all of the international software providers, beginning on page 14. A guide to the tables is on page 13. These tables are based on a detailed email survey among specialist software providers, asking them for specific information on eight categories of product. There is also a ninth, 'miscellaneous' category. Our criteria for inclusion in the guide were that each manufacturer provided full details of the product on our questionnaire, that the product is relevant to the category, and that it was specifically developed for market research. There was no charge for inclusion. We have tried our best to ensure this guide represents the vast majority of MR software titles in use in the UK today, 4 Software comes down to earth and all ofthose in widespread use. Many of these packages are also widely used throughout the world. Of the 33 firms we contacted, 24 contributed product information and two others responded to an email advert, making a total of 26 companies represented in the tables. Our survey also gave us the opportunity to assess the size of the software market and the direction it seems to be going in, which is contained in the opening article on the following pages. Other articles are written by contributors, all of whom are at the forefront of technology for market research. Please note that we cannot be held responsible for information provided to us for the tables - please see the Guide to the tables on page 13. Whatever course you are steering that requires the use of computer technology in MR, we hope you will find this guide useful and reliable, not just now but in the longer term. We would also welcome your views.
